Plywood covering varnish
One of the fairly popular types of finishing plywood products is varnish coating. In furniture production, either coloring or flowering is more often used, but in the home design of furniture, this method is very widely used. The advantage of such a coating is not only that it can significantly improve the appearance of the product and at the same time preserve the unique original drawing of the wood texture, but also that the plywood covered with varnish is much better resists the effects of moisture and other negative factors of the environment. And this is quite important, given that the plywood has a waterproof price slightly higher, so for crafts for home they usually take a simple FC.
How to do it? First, the surface must be carefully prepared. If there are irregularities on it, then the protruding places should be rubbed with large sandpaper, and the cracks should be filled with putty. After that, a layer of primer is applied. The type of primer depends on the operating conditions of the product-if it is a piece of furniture that stands inside the dry room, then it will be enough acrylic, if it is a remote chair or chair or some kind of design that is on the street constantly, then it is better alkyd-it better protects from from damp and helps the faner to resist fungi. After the primer dries, the plywood should be thoroughly passed, this time already fine sandpaper. Dust after grinding must be removed, otherwise it will cause increased roughness of the surface after applying varnish and will negatively affect how such a coating will hold.
Immediately before starting work, it is necessary to thoroughly mix the varnish and let it stand for 15-20 minutes. This is necessary so that the air bubbles formed in the process of mixing come out of it, which can cause irregularities and bubbles on the surface of plywood. The varnish is applied in several layers with long uniform strokes with a regular brush or roller. It is important to monitor the state of the surface and prevent the formation of subtexts or clots – after drying, these defects will be visible much more than in the process of varnishing. Each layer is allowed to dry completely and only after that is applied the next. The number of layers is not limited, except, in fact, the existing amount of varnish – the larger there will be, the longer the product will maintain its appearance and the more it will be protected from atmospheric influences. Thus, it is possible to increase the moisture resistance and wear resistance of ordinary inexpensive plywood almost to the indicators that laminated plywood has, the price of which is significantly higher.
In the process of working with varnish, it is better to have gloves and goggles on yourself. This is not to say that modern varnishes are very toxic, but it is better to arm yourself and a respirator. In his absence, it is necessary to ensure free circulation of air in the room, but to ensure that it is precisely light ventilation, and not a strong draft that can spoil the quality of the surface covered with varnish.
