Networking tips: how to meet people once and be remembered forever

Networking is useful for everyone. And for a PR manager, the ability to make useful contacts is a must-have skill.

Let’s start with the basics of networking: it is important to have an elevator pitch ready – a short and convincing self-presentation that will take 30-60 seconds while you are riding in an elevator with a stranger.

In this mini-presentation, you need to be brief and precise: introduce yourself and explain how you can be useful as an expert, and then back up your story with a succinct case from your professional life. The main thing is that it should be an easy speech. You don’t need to memorize everything word for word, it is enough to formulate the main points.

Arrive early, leave late

The one who arrives first gets the best contacts. Many people find it difficult to meet people when there is a crowd around, and at the beginning of the event there are always significantly fewer people.

Staying at the afterparty gives you a great chance to make new contacts in an informal and relaxed atmosphere. Don’t leave right after the official part – it’s much easier to communicate over a cocktail or a buffet.

Of course, you can also meet people in the smoking room or on the street: in a relaxed atmosphere and in a small group, it’s easier to find common interests and start a conversation.

Come to events with goals

It’s worth coming to events and meetings with clearly defined goals. Think in advance about why you need networking at all. Perhaps you want to expand your circle of professional acquaintances or strive to establish useful business contacts in order to find a job.

Then set a goal to attend the nearest event – for example, to meet three people and exchange contacts. After the event, analyze the results: did you manage to achieve the goal, and if not, then why? This will help you better prepare for the next meetings.
